Gerhard Nordström (1925–2019) was a Swedish artist considered one of the most politically engaged artists in his country. His work developed over decades, encompassing both social commentary and more contemplative landscapes.
Nordström combined photorealistic depictions of peaceful Swedish summer landscapes with images of war victims, creating tension and forcing the viewer to confront the absurdity and cruelty of violence. Today, this series is considered one of the most important works of 20th-century Swedish art.
His works are included in the collections of major museums such as Moderna Museet and Borås Konstmuseum. Ystads konstmuseum has a large collection of his works. Even at the end of his life, he remained popular – his entire exhibition at a gallery in Malmö in 2017 was sold out.
